What are the best practices for safely operating passenger transportation vehicles?
The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration offers tips for operating passenger vehicle drivers.
- Wear Your Seatbelt – The driver and passengers should all wear a seat belt while the vehicle is moving. This is one of the easiest things you can do to prevent serious injury if an accident occurs.
- Avoid Distractions – Make sure you have your eyes on the road while you are driving. Avoid distractions, such as texting or using your hand to talk on that phone. These actions could cause you to be less focused on the road.
- Watch for Blind Spots – The general rule is that if you can’t see a truck or bus driver’s face in their mirror, they most likely cannot see you. When driving on the interstate especially, be careful of driving next to or behind large vehicles such as semi-trucks.
- Look Out for Wide Turns – Large vehicles like buses need a lot of extra space to make wide turns. Be patient and wait for these vehicles to turn before continuing to drive.
- Safely Merge and Pass – Always use your signal when you are merging or passing a larger vehicle.
- Drive Responsibly – Don’t get behind the wheel of a car after consuming drugs or alcohol. Remember that there is no safe limit for drinking before driving on the road. Also, make sure you are well-rested before you drive. You don’t want to start falling asleep as this could cause you to drift off the road. It’s best to switch with another driver or find a safe spot to take a quick rest if you’re getting tired.
