Driving for DoorDash, Uber Eats, Instacart, or Amazon Flex can offer flexible income, but it can also create an insurance gap many Florida drivers do not realize exists.

Most personal auto insurance policies are designed for commuting, errands, and other personal use. When you use your vehicle to deliver food, groceries, or packages for pay, the insurer may classify that driving as commercial activity and exclude it from your personal policy.

A standard personal auto policy may not cover an accident that happens while you are working as a delivery driver. If your insurer was not told that the vehicle is being used for paid deliveries, it may deny the claim or even cancel the policy.

Florida requires registered vehicles to carry at least $10,000 in Personal Injury Protection and $10,000 in Property Damage Liability coverage. However, meeting Florida’s minimum insurance requirements does not mean your policy automatically covers business-related driving.

Your personal auto policy may be active, but that does not necessarily mean you are protected while logged into a delivery app.

What Are the Three Phases of a Delivery?

Insurance coverage may change depending on your activity at the time of an accident.

  1. The app is off. You are using the vehicle for personal reasons, so your personal auto policy generally applies.
  2. The app is on, but you have not accepted an order. Your personal insurer may exclude the claim, while the delivery platform may provide limited or no coverage.
  3. You have accepted an order. You are traveling to the pickup location or delivering the order. The platform may provide certain coverage during this phase.

Some sources divide the final phases into two parts: driving to pick up the order and transporting it to the customer. Coverage varies by company, and some platforms provide only liability protection during active deliveries.

Does the Delivery Platform Pay After an Accident?

Possibly, but platform coverage should not be treated as a complete replacement for your own insurance.

The platform’s policy may cover injuries or property damage you cause to someone else while completing an active delivery. It may not cover damage to your vehicle, and deductibles, exclusions, and eligibility requirements may apply.

Could Your Delivery Work Be Creating a Coverage Gap?

Biscayne Risk & Insurance Group can review your personal auto policy, the delivery platforms you use, and the amount of time you spend driving for work.

You can schedule a Florida Delivery Driver Insurance Review before an accident exposes a gap in your coverage.

Do You Need an Endorsement or Commercial Auto Policy?

A rideshare, delivery, or business-use endorsement extends a personal policy to cover certain work-related driving. This may be appropriate for part-time drivers who primarily use their vehicles for personal transportation.

A commercial auto insurance policy is designed for vehicles used regularly for business. It may be better suited for full-time drivers, drivers working across multiple apps, or anyone who relies on delivery work as a primary source of income.

What Can a Denied Claim Cost?

A denied claim could leave you responsible for:

  • Repairs or replacement of your vehicle
  • Damage to another driver’s vehicle
  • Medical bills and lost income
  • Towing and rental transportation
  • Legal expenses or court judgments

Are You Protected Before a Delivery Accident Becomes a Coverage Dispute?

Delivery accidents do not always follow a straightforward claim path.

A single incident can involve questions about whether the app was active, whether an order had been accepted, whether the policy applies, what the delivery platform covers, and whether the vehicle was properly insured for business use. For Florida delivery drivers, those questions can become expensive quickly.

If you deliver food, groceries, or packages through DoorDash, Uber Eats, Instacart, Amazon Flex, or another platform, now is the time to review how your coverage responds.

At Biscayne Risk & Insurance Group, we help Florida drivers and businesses navigate complex personal and commercial auto coverage decisions. Our approach goes beyond placing a policy. We help clients identify where real-world driving activity may create risks that standard personal auto coverage does not fully address.
